About Me

My name is Davis Good. I live and work in my hometown of Tulsa after having spent fourteen years studying and serving in Oklahoma City, Pittsburgh, and Bridgeport (CT)—all cities which formed me deeply. I have worn a few different hats in my time, but most basically I am a director, storyteller, and composer.

By director, I mean a cultivator of persons and groups of people. Professionally, this is expressed in my role as a teacher and, previously, as a pastoral apprentice, music director, and occasional conductor. Informally, I am also in the habit of forming reading groups to foster friendship and stimulating conversation.

By storyteller, I mean both a writer of stories and a student of theology, i.e. the story of God and the world. Lately, this is expressed in The Figuralist, my series of letters and essays on Christian figural reading, as well as in a work of imaginative fiction—presently under wraps—in which I mean to hone my skills as a poet and make a minor contribution to the American literary tradition.

By composer, I mean a classically trained writer of music. My work here is wide-ranging, but my strong suit is writing for the human voice: opera, choir, art song, and theatre music. Professionally, I have written for Pittsburgh Opera, Voces Solis, and a variety of Shakespeare companies. In recent years, I have focused on setting psalms and writing hymns for Christian worship.
